The average cyclist killed last year was 48 years old.

Not a courier, not a teenager. The age profile of American cycling deaths looks nothing like the stereotype, and that has consequences for who the road gets designed around.

There is a picture that comes to mind when people imagine a cyclist killed in traffic. It is usually young, usually male, usually fast, and often carrying an implication about risk taken willingly.

The average age of the 1,103 cyclists killed on American roads in 2024 was 48.

Where the deaths actually cluster

The largest single group was riders aged 60 to 64, followed by those aged 55 to 59. The 60-to-64 group also carried the highest death rate of any age band, at 0.53 per 100,000 people, with 65-to-69-year-olds just behind at 0.52.

Children are a small part of this. Riders aged 14 and under accounted for 5 percent of those killed. They were 12 percent of those injured, which is roughly what you would expect if children ride at lower speeds, in slower places, and survive the crashes they do have.

The sex split is stark and consistent: 87 percent of those killed were male, and the population-adjusted death rate for men was more than seven times the rate for women. That gap is wider than the difference in how much each group rides, which means something other than exposure is doing work in it, though this dataset cannot say what.

Why the age profile matters

Two things follow, and neither is about blame.

The first is physiological and unavoidable. Older bodies survive impacts less often. A collision that a twenty-five-year-old walks away from can kill someone in their sixties, so the same road, and the same driver behaviour, produce different outcomes depending on who is riding. Any discussion of what speed is survivable has to account for who is actually out there.

The second is about design. If the people dying are in their fifties and sixties, the road is not primarily failing an imagined risk-taking twenty-year-old. It is failing commuters, club riders, and people who took up cycling for their health, which is a different population with different routes and different times of day. The 6-to-9 pm peak in the same dataset fits that group considerably better than it fits a teenager.

The part we can measure

Age is not something an instrumented bike has an opinion about. What it can do is record the conditions these riders are actually meeting: how much room drivers leave, on which roads, at which hours.

That matters here because the stereotype has a policy cost. If the mental image of a dead cyclist is someone young and reckless, the intervention that suggests itself is education aimed at riders. If the real profile is a 60-year-old on a familiar road at seven in the evening, the intervention that suggests itself is about the road and the passing behaviour on it. The evidence supports the second reading, and the argument for it gets stronger with measurement rather than anecdote.
