Is helmet-cam footage actually evidence?
Usually yes, and more readily than riders expect. What decides its weight is metadata, continuity, and whether anyone can tell it has not been altered.
The worry riders raise most often is that their footage will be waved away: too shaky, too amateur, too easy to fake. In practice, video recorded in a public place by a participant in the event is ordinarily admissible in the jurisdictions we are asked about. The interesting question is not whether it gets in but how much weight it carries once it does.
A caveat before anything else: this is a general description of how footage tends to be treated, not legal advice, and evidence rules differ by jurisdiction. If something serious is in progress, talk to a lawyer in your country.
What actually gets challenged
Rarely the existence of the video. Usually one of four things:
- Authenticity. Is this the original file, or a re-encode of an edit of a copy? Every re-export strips metadata and invites the question.
- Continuity.Does the clip start suspiciously close to the incident? A trimmed clip raises the obvious question of what came before, including whether the rider's own road position contributed.
- Provenance of any measurement.If you assert a distance, where did the number come from and can it be explained? “It looked like about two feet” is an opinion. A measurement with a stated method and an error band is closer to evidence.
- Identification. Is the plate legible enough to be read without inference, and does the vehicle in the plate frame provably match the vehicle in the incident frame?
What makes footage strong
The properties that hold up are unglamorous and almost entirely decided before you ever hit record:
- An untouched original. Archive the file straight off the card, before any editing. Work from copies.
- Embedded, consistent time. A camera clock set correctly, ideally GPS-synchronised. A timestamp that disagrees with the GPS track is the kind of small inconsistency that costs you credibility on an otherwise good report.
- Location, independently recorded. A GPS track that corroborates the clip is worth a great deal. It establishes where, which direction, and how fast you were going, pre-empting the most common counter-narrative.
- Context either side. Thirty seconds before and after shows your road position, whether you were signalled, and what the driver could see.
- A clear chain of custody. Where the file has lived since it left the camera, and who could have altered it.
Why we keep the original untouched
This is the reasoning behind a design decision people ask about: Rydiq never modifies your source file. Analysis runs against a derived copy; annotations, measurements and reports are generated as separate artefacts that reference the original by hash and timestamp. If anyone ever needs to establish that the footage is what came off the camera, that is a question with a clean answer.
It is also why the incident PDF states its method and its uncertainty rather than printing a single confident number. A report that explains how it arrived at 0.9 m survives scrutiny. A report that simply asserts 0.9 m does not.
The practical bit
Set your camera clock. Record continuously rather than in clips. Back the card up before you edit anything. Keep the GPS track. If you do only those four things, you are ahead of most of the footage that reaches a police portal.
