Two Milligan riders were killed on a training ride.
A driver struck eleven cyclists on US 19E in Carter County, Tennessee on Wednesday morning. Here is what is known, and an honest account of what a camera can and cannot do about a road like that one.
On the morning of Wednesday, August 19, eleven riders from the Milligan University cycling team were on a training ride along US Highway 19E near Simerly Creek, in the Hampton community of Carter County, Tennessee, about ten miles east of campus. A vehicle struck the group from behind.
Two sophomores, Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, were killed. Seven more riders were taken to hospitals, several of them in critical condition. The driver, John Benfield, 69, of Newland, North Carolina, has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is still reconstructing the crash. Major Roy Brown told reporters that troopers were "now trying to determine exactly what happened."
We are not going to speculate past that. The charges are allegations, the investigation is days old, and the people closest to this are still in hospital rooms. What follows is about the road, and about what we are building, not about the case.
What the affidavit says
Court documents filed since the crash fill in part of the picture. According to the trooper's affidavit, Benfield was following another vehicle on 19E when that vehicle moved from the outside lane into the inside lane. Benfield told investigators that he did not see the group of riders ahead of him in the outside lane until the vehicle in front of him changed lanes. The affidavit states there was no physical evidence that he attempted to stop or take evasive action before striking them. He was driving a 2003 Subaru Baja. Bond was set at $150,000.
That detail matters for how this crash gets described. This was not a narrow, shoulderless mountain lane. The riders were in the outside lane of a multi-lane highway, which is where the law permits them to be and where a group of eleven is about as conspicuous as a group of cyclists ever gets. The failure was not a lack of room. It was a vehicle arriving at highway speed into a lane that was already occupied, by a driver who says he did not see it and who, per the affidavit, did not slow.
Road safety researchers have a name for that: the looked-but-failed-to-see error. A driver's eyes pass over an object and their attention never registers it, because it does not match what they expected the lane ahead to contain. It is the single most common driver-reported cause in collisions with motorcyclists and cyclists, and it is why conspicuity advice aimed at riders has such disappointing returns. You cannot make yourself visible to someone who is not looking for you.
The speed environment is still the problem
We wrote in May that rural roads produce the worst outcomes for riders, and the lane configuration here is different from the two-lane case we described, but the underlying physics is not. Roughly a third of US cyclist fatalities occur in rural settings despite a small fraction of the riding happening there. What rural highways have in common is not width. It is a 55 mph design speed running past people moving at 15, on corridors with no separated facility of any kind, where a few seconds of misdirected attention is the entire margin.
The national infrastructure conversation is overwhelmingly urban. Protected lanes, daylighting, road diets, signal timing. All of it matters, and almost none of it is being built on the roads where riders are actually dying.
A camera would not have stopped this
We want to be straight about this, because the temptation to claim otherwise is exactly why safety marketing is so often insulting. Rydiq does not brake for anyone. It does not steer, it does not warn a driver, and it would not have changed what happened on 19E on Wednesday morning. Nothing a rider straps to a seatpost can absorb the energy of a vehicle that arrives in the space they are occupying.
What a rear-facing camera actually does is keep a record. That record matters after the fact, in a police report or an insurer's file, and it matters enormously in aggregate. But it is documentation, not protection, and any product that tells you otherwise is selling you a talisman.
The passes nobody counted
Here is the part we think is actionable. A corridor does not become dangerous on the morning of a fatal crash. It is dangerous for years first, and that danger shows up as passes that came within a foot of a handlebar and were never written down anywhere.
As we argued earlier this summer, crash data is a terrible early-warning system. It is accurate, it is legally rigorous, and it only exists after somebody has been hit. Near-miss data is the opposite: enormously more frequent, historically unrecorded, and available years before a fatality. Most of what we know about it comes from self-reported complaint logs, which capture only the passes that frightened a rider enough to file, and which nobody can turn into a rate because the denominator is missing.
Ask a state DOT which two-lane corridors in their network have the worst measured lateral clearance and they cannot tell you. Not because they do not care. Because the number does not exist.
What we are actually trying to do
Rydiq measures the lateral distance of every vehicle that overtakes you, on every ride, not just the ones that crossed a threshold. That gives an individual rider a per-ride distribution and a one-page incident report they can hand to an officer. It gives us, at cohort scale, something closer to what the safety conversation has been missing: pass-distance distributions by road class and time of day, from ordinary riding, gathered before anything goes wrong.
The goal is a world where a road authority can be shown that a specific stretch of a specific highway is producing sub-three-foot passes at four times the rate of the corridor next to it, and shown it while every rider on that road is still alive. That is the whole thesis. It is a slower and less satisfying answer than a device that promises to save you, and it is the one we think is true.
Our condolences to the Milligan community, to the riders still recovering, and to the families of Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers. Eleven people went out to ride bikes on a Wednesday morning doing nothing wrong at all. That is the part worth sitting with.
